Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen leads are confident the expansion will live up to its name

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is getting its big Dark Arisen expansion this coming October and that name comes with some weight. While the first Dragon’s Dogma already had a good following by the time its expansion came out, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is where many fans feel the game became “complete.” That’s an impact Game Director Kento Kinoshita and Producer Naoto Oyama feel very aware of, but as they told me in a recent interview, they are a working from a good position on the back of the base Dragon’s Dogma 2, so now they get to provide players with even more of what they love.

The frozen land of Norgan awaits

One of the things I asked Kinoshita and Oyama about was how they decided on their snowy new biome, and when they decided that was the way they were going to go. To that, they mentioned that one of the biggest asks they kept getting from players was for more combat in the world.

“There was a considerable amount of feedback from players that they wanted to play more of Dragon’s Dogma 2, but they specifically wanted more out of the combat,” Kinoshita explained. “So when we started this project that was one of our priorities, but we didn’t want to players to just explore the base game area again. We wanted to make new content in a new area to offer more exploration in which to use the new attacks and systems we’ve developed.”

So why Norgen? Well, it’s because you can actually see it in the base game, but we never go there.

“In the base game’s Vernworth area, the first area you explore in Dragon’s Dogma 2, in the background you can see snow-capped mountains in the far off distance,” Kinoshita continued. “While we were planning we looked at that and thought, ‘oh, if you could go to that area, wouldn’t that be exciting?’ That’s what led to us beginning to actually create that snowy area for Dark Arisen.”

It’s not just a frosty flavor either. Norgen is full of not only its own creatures, but also special weather and environmental elements that provide unique challenges and opportunity to players, including blizzards, blinding fog, and creatures attracted to specific magic items on your person.

“In the new region, blizzards will obscure your vision in the game, including obscuring your minimap,” Kinoshita told me. “You’ll be able to see almost nothing around you, including enemies and where you should go. There are specific areas that you can expect to run into blizzards frequently, and we want players to think about how they’ll approach those areas and traverse them.”

And you’ll want very much to do that planning, especially if you’ve got a nice stock of Relics in your pack. These new items can be Appraised in Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen to become high tier items, provided you can get them to an appraiser in the game or have the items to do it yourself. If you’re saddled with them, you might become the target of a new Relic-hungry encounter, the Snowfoot.

“If you collect a considerable amount of Relics and have them in your inventory, a new enemy called the Snowfoot will come and try to steam those Relics from you,” Oyama warned. “The Snowfoot is really fast once it has your Relics. So there comes a decision players will have to make to maybe chase and track the trail to their home. And you might end up with not just your stolen Relics, but also other Relics the Snowfoot had been hoarding as well.”

The power of those two words

Naming the Dragon’s Dogma 2 expansion “Dark Arisen” has always been an interesting decision to me as a fan. The first game’s expansion is arguably what took the first game from a pretty good immersive open-world RPG to the cult classic its fans would come to love and protect at all costs. Choosing that name felt like it set an expectation, but Kinoshita and Oyana feel equipped for that comparison.

“There are many people that feel Dark Arisen for Dragon’s Dogma kind of ‘completed’ the game,” Oyama told me. “They felt Dark Arisen provided what was missing from the first game. For Dragon’s Dogma 2, between the base game and the title updates, our development team has felt increasingly like the complete experience is already there where people can fully enjoy it. The biggest feedback we got from players for the sequel is that they wanted to play Dragon’s Dogma 2 more, so the motivation is different. Here, we want to expand the already completed gameplay so that players can enjoy the game more.”

So then why the Dark Arisen name? Because they know it carries weight.

“We understand that when we named the expansion content ‘Dark Arisen,’ it leads people to expect something really big, new, and enjoyable like it was for the first game,” Oyama continued. “We are confident that we made a great thing for Dragon’s Dogma 2 that will live up to the ‘Dark Arisen’ name and we hope people will enjoy when it comes out.”
