2XKO will end active development in December 2026

Riot Games and the 2XKO team see no path for sustainability of the game, but will launch all remaining revealed content and a final patch in December.

It’s a hard week for 2XKO as Riot Games and the team on the tag fighter have announced that active development will end on the game in December 2026. Servers will remain online and revealed content will be released, but the final content patch will go out in October before a last balance and bug fix run at the end of the year.

Riot Games and the 2XKO team announced this decision in a blog post on Riot Games’ website. The developers remain committed to finishing up what has been shown (Samira and Lux will still be launching), and even after active development ends, the servers will stay on. Those who purchased content before today will also have their purchases refunded (new content purchases are on you).

The team goes on to explain the primary reasons why development is ending on 2XKO:

We evaluated the game’s overall performance—not just revenue, but retention, new players, and engagement—through 2026. We saw positive player reactions through the releases of Akali, Senna, Thresh, The Climb (PVE), and some amazing competitive events throughout the year. Even in these highlight moments, however, we saw no meaningful, sustained change in 2XKO’s trajectory; only a fraction of what it would take to trend toward sustainability. Over time it became clear it would be impossible for us to continue actively developing the game as we are today.

Earlier this year, Riot Games launched 2XKO into a full 1.0 release, and laid off a large portion of its team shortly after, claiming the launch failed to support a team of its size. Despite that, the 2XKO team moved on with adding Thresh and Senna to the game, putting on a dynamite spectacle at EVO 2026 where Creative Director Mike Henry gushed to me about its future, and where the developers revealed Lux and Samira.

The servers will stay on, so 2XKO will remain playable, but as we approach the end of the year, stay tuned to the game’s topic as Riot Games prepares to sunset development.
